Cleobury Mortimer To Pilot New Crime Reduction Scheme

The Shropshire Star have recently reported on the ‘We Don’t Buy Crime’ scheme commencing, in the small Shropshire town of Cleobury Mortimer. The South Shropshire location, in collaboration with West Mercia Police will be one of the first areas in the region to use ‘We Don’t Buy Crime’. The project will involve signs being erected around Cleobury Mortimer announcing the start of the scheme. In addition, security and property marking packs will be distributed to every household in the town.

The Parish Clerk and crime reduction group chariman, Mr Matt Sheehan stated that  the scheme primarily uses ‘SmartWater‘. This is a liquid that can be put onto any kind of property and then be used to trace the original owner. The producers of SmartWater are based in Telford and are already working with the Metropolitan Police in London. In London, 440,000 packs have already been given out. However, Mr Sheehan thinks that Cleobury Mortimer will be the first complete ‘SmartWater’ town in the Country.

“This is a massive project for Cleobury … We’re trying to make residents safe and secure, because a lot of the burglaries we have are by people coming through so they are hard to trace. We don’t have a police station now. I think it’s how it has to proceed – the community getting involved.” Mr Sheehan said.

Mr Sheehan went on to say that the crime reduction group had secured £15,000 worth of funding to cover the cost of the packs and signage for private households. He added that local businesses and farmers would, at a reduced rate, be able to obtain larger packs.

A meeting will be held tomorrow on 3rd September 2015 in the Market Hall, for a full explanation of how the SmartWater system works and also for talking further about crime reduction proposals. Church Stretton is expected to follow next, in the footsteps of Cleobury Mortimer.
